MACRONUTRIENTS


In this project, you will create a poster to compare a fast food meal and a USDA/FDA recommended meal to learn about the three macronutrients that fuel our bodies: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Activities

1.  Go to the USDA website ChooseMyPlate.org and create your personalized dietary profile.
  • Complete the questions in Step 1 and Step 2 and submit your information.
  • Print your information to the "Black & White" printer.


2.  Read your profile and create a nutritious meal under the USDA guidelines for your calorie level (based on your plan).
  • Go to the USDA Healthy Recipe page to find healthy meals.  
  • Each meal will have nutrition facts to include on your poster:  Total Fat (unsaturated and saturated), Total Carbohydrates (fiber and sugar), Protein

3.  Find a fast food meal that you would typically eat by searching for a fast food restaurant's nutrition facts.
  •  search example= McDonald's Nutrition Facts
  • Each item will have nutrition facts that you will need to add together to find:  Total Fat (unsaturated and saturated), Total Carbohydrates (fiber and sugar), Protein


4.  Print images of each of the meals and place them on divided plates based on the total amounts of:  
  • Fruits/Vegetables, Protein, Grains
  • You should notice a big difference between the fast food meal and the nutritious meal.


Your finished poster should include:
A.  Two plates: one with a fast food meal and one with a nutritious meal
B.  Two lists of nutrition facts (one from each meal)
C.  Your basic nutrition needs with lifestyle (example:  sedentary, active, very active)
